The daughter of Choi Soon-sil, the longtime friend of President Park Geun-hye at the heart of a massive corruption scandal, has applied to give up a university place that she allegedly gained by improper means.

Ewha Womans University on Thursday said Chung, who is in Germany, sent an application online on Oct. 31.

But to complete the process, the application must be printed out and signed by the student, her guardian, professor and the dean of the department, a school spokesman said. It can be submitted by a representative.

The Education Ministry is investigating whether Chung was given preferential treatment when she was admitted under special rules as a dressage athlete and also during her school days.

A ministry official said the school will be advised not to process the application until the investigation ends as her admission may be canceled anyway. Prosecutors are mulling whether to summon Chung over a 2.8 million euro payment from Samsung to a paper company founded by her mother.

Some of the money was allegedly used to buy a horse for Chung. Her lawyer said Chung will return to Korea if she is summoned.
