A Korean-born diplomat has been appointed as Australia's next ambassador to Korea, the Australian foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

James Choi is the first Korean Australian to serve in the post since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1961.

Choi emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of 4 and studied economics and law at the University of Sydney. Until recently, he served as a senior adviser to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.
