Two-time Olympic champion speed skater Lee Sang-hwa began the new season by competing in a national championship on Wednesday.

The competition doubles as a tryout to select the national team for the International Skating Union speed skating events for the 2016-17 season.

Unsurprisingly, Lee finished first in women's 500 m with a time of 38.57 seconds.

"The record was in the range I expected to be, but I'm a bit disappointed," she said. "I'm looking forward to the World Cup series and the World Championships."

Last season, recovering from a knee injury, she won four gold and two silver medals in four out of six World Cup series events she competed in. She also reclaimed the title at the ISU World Singles Distances Speed Skating Championships in Russia after losing it for two consecutive years.

Lee's final goal is to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals by landing on the podium in the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, which she has said will the final competition of her career.
