Large numbers of North Koreans have fled across the Duman River to China since flood waters began receding in North Hamgyong Province, sources say.
Kim Yong-hwa of NK Refugees Human Rights Association of Korea, who has been helping North Korean refugees, said about 100 North Korean defectors hiding in China "have asked us to send them to South Korea" over the last couple of weeks.
"North Korean authorities have stepped up surveillance since the worst flooding there, but it seems that an increasing number of North Koreans are crossing the Duman River to survive because relief operations and repairs have been delayed," he added.
The number of North Koreans fleeing their country is still increasing despite strict surveillance by a stronger contingent of security forces along the border.
North Korean concentration camps are teeming with defectors who have been repatriated from China recently, Radio Free Asia quoted a source in North Hamgyong Province as saying.
