Oh Seung-hwan of the St. Louis Cardinals retired two hitters to reach his 100th strikeout of the season in a home game against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
The Cardinals were down 2-1 when Oh took the mound with a runner on third and one out at the top of the eighth, striking out the pair to end the inning. In the ninth, he allowed an infield hit and left the mound after complaining of pain in his groin.
The Reds went on to win with the score unchanged.
Oh later said he could have closed the inning but wanted to be sure he was fit for the next game. The 2-1 loss to the Reds leaves the Cardinals in third place in the National League Wild Card race, 1.5 games behind the second-placed San Francisco Giants.
