Fewer people are expected to live in Seoul in the year 2040 as the population grows older.
The average household will also shrink in size, with one-person households accounting for about 60 percent of the total population, according to a report by the Seoul Institute based on census data from Statistics Korea.
The capital is expected to see a decline in its current 10 million population to nearly 9 million. The think tank said the continuing low birthrate, coupled with the rise in the number of households leaving the city due to exorbitant housing expenses will push more people out of Seoul.
The report estimates the median age will stand at 52, up from 39 in 2013.
