UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is preparing for his return to Korea when his term ends by refurbishing his apartment in Seoul.

Ban, who has presidential ambitions, has also reportedly asked family and close friends to exercise caution when making public comments.

One close aide to Ban said Wednesday that refurbishment of his apartment in southern Seoul is almost finished. Ban bought the 160 sq.m apartment in Sadang-dong when he was foreign minister, but it has been sitting empty.

Ban refuses to comment on his presidential ambitions and has told family members to avoid contact with journalists or politicians. The elections are in December next year.

He also told associates to exercise caution and avoid controversy.

Ban has declined to meet with Korean politicians and other people seeking to form political ties with him. Some have apparently traveled to New York to meet him.

One Saenuri Party lawmaker who like Ban comes from the Chungcheong region said, "Ban's wish is for everyone to remain calm until he returns to Korea and announces his intention to enter local politics."
