The Supreme Public Prosecutors' Office said Monday it will investigate an old video showing Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee apparently paying women for sex.

Online outlet Newstapa published leaked video clips last week showing a group of women entering a house and meeting a man who bears a striking resemblance to Lee.

The man is heard thanking the women for their efforts and hands them envelopes.

Prosecutors plan to investigate whether the women who appear in the clips actually had sex with Lee. They will also probe whether the person who filmed the moment attempted to blackmail Samsung.

If genuine, the tape must date back some years to the period between 2011 and 2013 as Lee has been in a coma since a heart attack in May 2014.

The Samsung Group in a statement last week did not deny that the man in the clips is Lee but added it was a "personal matter" and expressed regret for causing "a stir."
