North Korea could be facing its worst food shortage since 2011, a UN report estimates. Citing the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, Voice of America said the shortfall will be almost 700,000 tons this year.
North Korea's rice harvest dropped by more than a quarter to under 2 million tons last year from a year earlier. Its corn harvest fell to 2.3 million tons. But other harvests like beans and buckwheat increased by about 35 percent.
The UN agency says beans are now the main source of protein for North Koreans.
