Lee Ji-sun, who survived a traffic accident that burned half of her body, recently received a PhD in social welfare from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Her dissertation explores ways of changing people's attitudes to the disabled. She plans to serve as a social welfare expert here and hopes to contribute to improving welfare for those with special needs.
Before the accident caused by a drunk driver in 2000, Lee studied child education at Ewha Womans University. But in the wake of the accident she had to undergo more than 40 painful operations, which led to an interest in welfare for the disabled.
She wrote a book on how she overcame the painful process of treating the scars of her mind and body in 2003.
