Samsung and SK Hynix both saw sharp declines in sales of DRAM chips in the first quarter of this year.
Samsung's sales of DRAM chips declined 16.6 percent to US$3.97 billion, while SK Hynix's sales fell 19.2 percent to $2.32 billion, according to market researcher DRAMeXchange.
Samsung and SK Hynix are the world's top two DRAM makers, accounting for three quarters of the global market, but sales dropped due to a steady fall in demand for smartphones and PCs.
Global shipments of smartphones and PCs fell by 3 percent and 9.6 percent during the same period.
