The Youth America Grand Prix, the world's biggest ballet competition for students, will hold a regional contest in Korea.

Seo Hee, a Korean principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater, said at the YAGP Gala in New York last Thursday that the move "will pave the way for more young Korean dancers to enter the international arena."

The YAGP provides educational and professional opportunities to young dancers aged nine to 19.

So far Korean dancers had to go abroad to take part in regional competitions, but now they can enter at home and only travel to the finals in New York if they win.

Seo set up a foundation last November and worked to bring the youth ballet event to Korea. The first regional competition in Korea will be held in Seoul from July 22 through 24.

Seo was herself a winner of of the YAGP in senior divisio in 2003. "I hope to establish a scholarship foundation to help young dancers realize their dreams. This is just the start," she said.
