The government on Thursday unveiled 10 graphic images showing the harmful effects of smoking that will be required on cigarette packages from the end of this year.
Pictures of a diseased lung, a throat with a hole in it, and a row of rotten teeth are among the 10 candidate images chosen by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to accompany cigarette package warnings.
The ministry plans to submit its final list of images by June 23. Cigarette manufacturers will be required to incorporate the images on their products starting Dec. 23.
Aimed at discouraging smoking, the images must occupy more than 30 percent of the front and back of each package, and must be changed every 18 months.
