Gov't to Waive Entry Ban for Illegals Who Leave Voluntarily

Illegal immigrants will be temporarily exempted from a re-entry ban if they voluntarily leave the country, the Justice Ministry said Sunday.

But the ban will be extended to five years for those who fail to leave, and their employers will also be punished.

So far the ministry has exempted illegals who stayed less than a year from entry bans if they left voluntarily, while those who stayed for more than a year were banned from coming back for up to two years.

Illegal aliens who want to leave should bring a passport and airplane/boat ticket to the airport or harbor immigration office.

As of the end of December last year, 1.9 million foreigners were staying in Korea, 214,000 or 11.2 percent illegally, the ministry said.
