Gov't Unveils New Logo

The government on Tuesday unveiled a new logo for all agencies featuring a taegeuk or yin-yang symbol.

The logo had been in development since last year, the 70th anniversary of independence. It was designed by Kim Hyun, who was also responsible for the mascots for the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and the 1993 Daejeon Expo.

The project arose from calls for a unified government emblem because 51 government agencies have been using their own logos, sowing endless confusion.

But the grand unifying plan was immediately watered down so that the Defense Ministry and the National Police Agency can keep using their own, supposedly because they are firmly embedded in the public mind.

In a survey of 1,158 citizens by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last March, some 68.9 percent of respondents agreed that a unified logo is needed.
