More and more young people who are trying to lose weight look for a "diet mate," with whom they can check the progress of their regime and encourage each other along the way.
They exchange photos of the food they eat, their weight and exercise.
One 27-year-old office worker said, "When I go to a restaurant with my friends, it’s hard just to eat salad, but I found consolation in my diet mate because we were able to exchange photos of our greens. It was really helpful."
Most of them are found online on forums used mostly by younger women, but an increasing number of men are looking for a mate as well.
One 31-year-old man said, "I want to have six-pack abs, and I thought if I can have a male-to-male competition, it would be much more efficient. We check on each other every day whether we exercised and whether we drank any alcohol."
There are also bigger diet groups. One group in Incheon consists of six women in their 20s or 30s who upload their diet plan once a day, and photos of their body at weekends. If there is no activity for a week in the group, that person is kicked out.
Some people also meet offline to exercise together. More apps related to weight loss are adding features to enable users to connect with people who want to work out together.
