Bomb Hoax Rattles Incheon Airport

A box appearing to contain explosives together with a printed note in Arabic was found outside a toilet in Incheon International Airport on Friday.

The note was printed in broken Arabic on a piece of paper and read, "This is the last warning to you... Allah will punish you."

The box contained two butane canisters and a water bottle that had been taped together, as well as three guitar strings, four electric cords, four batteries, broccoli, cabbage, and banana peel.

The paper box came from a Korean bakery chain that has an outlet in the airport.

Incheon police ran the Korean translation through Google Translate and came up with a near-identical text, suggesting the hoaxers had used the same method.

Prof. Lee In-seop of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies said, "It has some grammatical errors. But it doesn't sound completely wrong, so it could have been written by someone who knew some Arabic or had help from someone who did."

Police are analyzing fingerprints and said they are not ruling out that sympathizers with Islamist terror groups were behind the hoax.
