People will have to show their identification card along with their ticket when getting on ferries or ships starting next week.
The new law will go into effect next Monday, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security said Tuesday.
The new requirement was prompted by difficulties identifying the victims of recent disasters at sea, where some people gave false information or none at all and figures did not tally.
Operators will face a fine of W2 million if they carry passengers without checking their ID (US$1=W1,206).
