The median age of Seoul citizens first surpassed 40 in 2014.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Wednesday, the median age of Seoul residents rose from 31.7 in 2000 and will reach 42.4 in 2020 and 47.3 in 2030.
The proportion of people over 65 has been rising from 5.4 percent in 2000 to 11.8 percent in 2014, while the proportion of children under 15 dropped from 18.6 percent to 12.2 percent.
In the second quarter of 2015, the proportion of the elderly population for the first time surpassed that of the youth population, with 12.1 percent to 12 percent.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government predicts that the elderly population will grow to 23.2 percent in 2030, meaning one out of five people living in Seoul will be over 65.
"With medical advances, life expectancy has increased while the birthrate has continued to fall. This is the big factor behind population aging," a Seoul city official said.
