Pantone Picks Baby Pink and Blue as Colors of the Year

U.S. color company Pantone on Tuesday announced its colors of the Year 2016, and they are "rose quartz" and "serenity," which are shades of baby pink and baby blue.

It is the first time that Pantone chose two colors, claiming the choice "challenges traditional perceptions of color association."

"In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design," the company said on its website. "This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer's increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged."

Some men still tend to consider pink a threat to their masculinity, but fashion experts in Korea say that is changing. Pink can be seen in next year's spring and summer menswear collections for Acne Studios, Anderson Bell, Etro and Gucci.

Pantone's Color of the Year seems to have some influence on the fashion, cosmetics and design industries. This is the first time it has chosen pastel colors since 2006.
