The government hopes to make sure that electric vehicles account for five percent of all cars in Korea by 2030, including 33,000 public buses.
Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn in a meeting on Monday announced the timid goal as part of measures to deal with climate change and to tap into new energy sources.
The ministry also hopes to establish a nationwide network of recharging stations by 2020.
Jeju Island has larger ambitions and aims to replace all 370,000 cars on the island with electric ones by 2030.
