Apples are Korean's favorite fruit, according to a recent study by the Rural Development Administration.

Researchers at the RDA conducted a study of some 732 households to figure out which fruits they bought from December 2009 to November 2013.

According to the study, they spend an average of W85,473 per year on apples, the highest spending among their purchases of fruits (US$1=W1,161).

"Unlike other fruits, apples are loved all-year-round and especially for holidays as they are often prepared for a ritual table for Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving and any other ancestral memorial services," researchers said.

Koreans spent the second most on clementines at W68,856, followed by grapes at W63,441, watermelons at W52,720 and strawberries at W45,892.

Apples were also purchased most frequently at 8.7 times a year on average, nearly four times more than pears, which were purchased the least at 2.3 times.

Greenhouse farming makes it possible to enjoy all kinds of fruit year-round, but people still prefer to buy seasonal fruits.

Clementines were most popular from October to March, grapes from August to October, peaches from July to September, persimmons from October to November, watermelons from May to August and strawberries from December to April.
