The military plans to draft 20,000 more troops by 2017 in an effort to reduce the number of people who are waiting to start their mandatory military service.
The defense ministry said Tuesday the government and the ruling party have agreed to increase the defense budget by US$53 million over the next two years to fund the move. The plan has been submitted to parliament with the goal of having it passed within the year.
All able-bodied men between the ages of 18 to 35 are required to serve in the military for nearly two years. But roughly 30,000 men have to postpone their conscription each year.
