Processed meat can be as harmful as smoking, which has been categorized as a major cause of cancer, the World Health Organization claimed Monday.
Researchers claim that eating a daily 50 g portion of processed meat -- or less than two slices of bacon -- increases the risk of colorectal cancer by almost 20 percent, though the risk "remains small."
Absurdly, the findings mean the WHO now lists processed meat like sausages and Parma ham alongside asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes as cancer agents.
Eating too much fresh red meat is also deemed a risk. The WHO says red meat is "probably" carcinogenic based on "limited evidence."
