Bartomeu Mari, the outgoing director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, is a leading candidate for the position of director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea, which has been vacant for a year.
According to insiders, the Ministry of Personnel Management is checking the backgrounds of three people who recently passed interviews, including two Koreans, but it is almost certain that Mari is going to be appointed.
Sources said Mari scored much higher in interviews, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is close to making the decision.
Mari is Catalan and studied philosophy at the University of Barcelona. From 2008 until September he was director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. If he is appointed, he will be the first ever non-Korean to head a leading Korean national or public cultural institution.
