20-Somethings Heaviest Smokers Among Women

      Korean women in their twenties are the highest percentage of women smokers in Korea at 10 percent.

      According to the Korea Health Promotion Foundation on Sunday, the smoking rate of Korean adult women has been around six percent since 2008.

      The percentage of smokers among adult women was 7.4 percent in 2008, 7.1 percent in 2009, and 6.3 percent in 2010. It briefly rose to 6.8 percent in 2011 and 7.9 percent in 2012, but dropped again to 6.2 in 2013 and 5.7 percent in 2014.

      What was noticeable was the percentage of smokers among women in their twenties, which was almost twice as high with 12.7 percent in 2008, 11.1 percent in 2009, 7.4 percent in 2010, 10.4 percent in 2011, 13.6 percent in 2012, 9.1 percent in 2013, and 8.9 percent in 2014.

      These figures are still considerably lower than many major nations in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

      According to OECD Health Data, the smoking rate of Korean women aged 15 or older is 4.3 percent, significantly below the OECD average of 15.7 percent. France averaged 20.2 percent, the U.K. 19 percent and Japan 8.2 percent.
