A 75-year-old taxi driver crashed into two imported luxury cars and two high-end Korean limousines at a parking lot in Lotte Hotel in downtown Seoul on Oct. 10, but Lotte will pay for the estimated W500 million damage (US$1=W1,144).
"We felt the amount of compensation would be too much for the driver and decided to pay for the amount that isn't covered by his insurance," a Lotte Hotel spokesman said.
The driver crashed into a potted plant while driving into the hotel over the weekend and ended up colliding with a Porsche Panamera Turbo, Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and Hyundai Grandeur sedan. The collision caused the Panamera to slam into an Equus parked next to it as well. The cars involved in the crash cost between W110 million and W280 million.
The insurance provided by the taxi drivers' cooperative covers only up to W100 million in property damage, so Lotte is expected to foot an additional W200-400 million bill.
"We spoke with Seo's family and he is apparently distraught by the accident," the spokesman said.
Last year, Samsung heiress and Hotel Shilla president Lee Boo-jin offered to cover the damage caused by an elderly cab driver when his vehicle careened into the hotel lobby, injuring four people.
