A man in his 50s has stepped up to claim an envelope with W100 million in checks that was found in a trash dump in the luxurious Tower Palace apartment in Gangnam (US$1=W1,171).

The man, identified only by his surname Kwak, called police in Suseo on Monday and claimed he had put the money in the envelope to pay for remodeling work at his new apartment.

Police will check Kwak's claims once he returns from a business trip to Japan.

The trash dump in the Tower Palace apartment in Gangnam, Seoul on Monday, where an envelope stuffed with millions of won in checks was discovered on Friday.

The cleaning lady who found the envelope Friday night will be entitled a reward of W5-20 million, or five to 20 percent of the value of found property.

Although the sum was large for a cash payment, police are apparently not suspicious where it came from. One interior decorator in Gangnam said W100 million is not an exorbitant amount for remodeling a large apartment in one of Seoul's most affluent parts.
