Foreign minister Yun Byung-se will meet with his counterparts from the U.S. and Japan in New York next Tuesday.
A ministry spokesman on Tuesday told reporters that Yun will talk about the government’s efforts to improve inter-Korean relations following the agreements reached between two Koreas on Aug. 25.
The three top diplomats will then discuss ways of cooperating to boost peace and safety on the Korean Peninsula.
The meeting is also expected to consider more sanctions against North Korea if it does not stop its saber rattling, a diplomatic source said.
"In case of any new provocation from the North, the UN Security Council will likely hold a meeting immediately to adopt a resolution," said Oh Joon, South Korea's ambassador to the UN, in a press interview. "UN sanctions do not impose bans on general trade, but if it adopts an umbrella sanction it could affect trade as well."
