Seven Korean universities rank among top 200 in the world in this year's tally by U.K. ranking firm Quacquarelli Symonds.
Seoul National University came 36th in the World University Rankings published Monday.
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) came 43rd, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) 87th, Korea University 104th, Yonsei University 105th, Sungkyunkwan University 118th, and Hanyang University 193rd.
The rankings cover 3,539 universities around the world.
The top spots were held by U.S. and British universities. MIT ranked first, followed by Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, Caltech, and Oxford.
The top 10 consist of five U.S., four British and one Swiss university.
Among Asian universities, National University of Singapore came top in 12th place overall. Next were Nanyang Technological University of Singapore (13th) and Tsinghua University of China (25th).
It was the 12th year that QS evaluated universities. In the early years only two Korean universities ranked among the top 200, but that rose to six in 2012 and seven this year.
