Torrential rains are about to hit the south of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday, but they will be no big help in ending the prolonged drought in central parts.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said Monday Chan-hom, the 9th typhoon of this year, is bringing heavy rains in southern parts, pushing northward a seasonal rain front to affect Seoul and Gyeonggin Province from Wednesday afternoon.
But central regions are expected to see no more than 20 mm of precipitation, which may help dry crops and combat an algae outbreak in the Han River but not fully relieve the drought, a weatherman said.
Chan-hom is expected to make landfall in Shanghai, while the 10th typhoon Linfa will likely disappear in Taiwan and the 11th, Nangka, will pass through Japan. The chances are therefore that the drought will persist in central parts for the time being.
