Subway and bus fares in Seoul will rise starting from June 27.

The increase comes three years and four months after the previous hike in February 2012, when they went up by W150 (US$1=W1,104). The fares in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon will also increase at the same time.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Thursday that the subway fare will rise by W200 from W1,050 to W1,250, and the bus fare by W150 from W1,050 to W1,200.

Passengers using transport cards before 6:30 a.m. will get a 20 percent discount, a measure introduced for the first time. With the discount, they will pay W1,000 on the subway and W960 on the bus when they use them early in the morning.

Like Korean citizens, foreigners aged 65 or older with permanent residency will be able to take the subway for free.
