Almost half of moviegoers enjoy going to the cinema alone, a survey surprisingly found.
The Chosun Ilbo and ticketing site Maxmovie conducted the e-mail survey of 10,447 people who bought movie tickets at Maxmovie from May 11 to 22.
Women accounted for 66 percent of respondents, while people in their 20s, 30s and 40s accounted for 42 percent, 33 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
When asked "who did you last go to the movies with?," 44.5 percent said they went alone. Some 24.6 percent went with their girlfriend or boyfriend and 8.6 percent cited their spouse.
"An increase in the number of solo moviegoers is the most significant change in viewership," Maxmovie said. "As there are more multiplexes, more people tend to watch films alone at a theater near their work or home early in the morning or late at night."
The survey also found that as many as 85 percent go to the movies once a week, suggesting that watching movies is one of the most popular leisure activities.
