The number of women with an annual salary of over W100 million exceeds the 40,000 mark, and there are 2.11 million businesswomen accounting for 40 percent of all people who run their own company.
According to data released by the National Tax Service on Tuesday, the female workforce totaled 6.43 million in 2013, up 22.9 percent from 5.23 million in 2009. The male workforce grew by only 9.5 percent over the same period.
The number of women who earned eight-digit salaries stood at 40,609 in 2013, a 2.8-times increase from 2009. Those in the financial and insurance sectors took up the largest share with 11,278, followed by those in the health industry with 6,348.
In businesses with sales of over W10 billion, the number of female CEOs rose 737 to 1,863. Some 630 worked in the manufacturing sector, followed by 622 in retail. Women in their 40s and 50s accounted for 71.2 percent.
