Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a three-nation tour of China, Mongolia, and Korea on Thursday. It is his first visit to all three countries since he became prime minister in May last year.
His first destination is Xian, the hometown of Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is a rare for Chinese leader to greet a visiting head of state somewhere other than Beijing. The choice reflects Modi's gratitude for Xi's visit to his home province of Gujarat to celebrate Modi's birthday in September last year.
Modi is to stay in China until Saturday and move to Mongolia on Sunday. He will be in Korea next Monday and Tuesday.
A summit with President Park Geun-hye is scheduled for Monday, and the two leaders will discuss ways to strengthen cooperative ties between Korea and India.
