A reservist went on a shooting spree at a training camp in southern Seoul on Wednesday, killing three people and wounding two others before committing suicide.
The 23-year-old, identified only by his surname Choi, opened fire on his comrades while receiving training at a military camp in Naegok-dong, southern Seoul around 10:30 a.m., the Army said in a statement.
Shooting rampages are common in the armed forces, but they usually involve conscripts who are being subjected to merciless hazing, rarely reservists.
Choi apparently planned the shooting. A letter was found in his shirt pocket that read, "I will go to target practice tomorrow. I want to kill them all and take my own life."
He said he was becoming obsessed with the thought of killing everyone and committing suicide as he had wanted to during his military service along the inter-Korean border. He added he regretted missing the opportunity during his conscription.
Rapper Psy and actors Jung Suk-won and Jang Su-won were also in training that morning. But Psy and Jung had left early while Jang was in a different part of the camp when the shooting occurred.
YG Entertainment said Psy had an afternoon appointment and obtained leave to get supplementary training at a later date. He left around 20 minutes before the incident.
