Nearly half of the 19 million wage and salary workers in Korea are paid less than W2 million per month, according to data released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday.
The figures showed that 12.5 percent of 18.95 million workers earn less than W1 million a month, and 37 percent make somewhere between W1 million and W2 million. This means 49.5 percent of them, or 9.38 million people, are earning less than W2 million a month. This is a slight drop from last year's 50.7 percent.
As of the second half of last year, 25.1 percent made W2 million to W3 million, 13.1 percent earned W3 to W4 million, and 12.3 percent over W4 million.
By sector, 30.6 percent of those in the science and technology sectors and 30.5 percent in the finance and insurance industry earned over W4 million per month.
In contrast, nearly half -- or 49.7 percent -- of those working in the farming, forestry, and fishery sectors were paid less than W1 million monthly.
