Some 879 male office workers took paternity leave in the first quarter of this year, up 55.9 percent from last year, the Ministry of Employment and Labor said on Thursday.
The overall number of parents who took childcare leave stood at 19,743 during the same period, with fathers accounting for 4.5 percent of the total.
The rise is mainly due to an increasing perception that a man has the same responsibilities as a woman for childcare, the ministry said.
In the first three months of this year, 380 workers reduced their working hours to care for children, up 113.5 percent from 2014.
