U.S. Defense Minister Ashton Carter, who arrives in South Korea on Thursday, will visit a memorial for the sailors who died when North Korea sank the Navy corvette Cheonan in 2010.
Carter visits South Korea for three days on a trip to the Asia-Pacific region. He will go to the memorial on Friday after meeting his South Korean counterpart Han Min-koo.
"The U.S. insisted on Carter visiting the Cheonan memorial," a government official here said. "It will be a chance to show North Korea that South Korea and the U.S. are determined to stand together against any provocation."
Meanwhile, the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea is not on the official agenda, but the official said, "We can't rule out that the U.S. will raise the subject."
