Samsung Electronics is implementing more flexible working hours this month in a further sign that the notoriously top-down management style at the giant conglomerate is shifting.
Staff are now free to come and go as long as they work at least four hours a day between 6. a.m. and 10 p.m. and 40 hours a week.
A Samsung spokesman said, "Staff can manage their own working hours as long as they can perform their duties. They'll be evaluated on their performance later."
Samsung trialed the scheme with staff in research and development and design staff, and the company let individual division heads to decide if their staff can work on flexitime, except for assembly line workers.
The company previously permitted a flexible start at any time before 1 p.m. but insisted that staff work at least eight hours every day.
Subsidiaries within the Samsung Group are not required to follow the scheme. Samsung SDI and Samsung Display, which supply components to Samsung Electronics, may implement flexitime, but financial units that must deal with clients or the construction and engineering arms will find it harder to adopt.
