A dislodged disc in the lower back was the No. 1 reason why most Koreans were hospitalized last year.
Some 279,327 people went to hospital for lumbar disc herniation last year, according to health insurance data from 2010 to 2014 by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service.
In 2010 lumbar disc herniation ranked only seventh, but the number of in-patients increased 14.7 percent on annual average. As recently as 2013 pneumonia was the top cause.
Most female patients with lumbar disc herniation were in their 50s (42,863) and 40s (34,121), while most male patients were in their 30s (35,535) and 40s (32,203).
"The increase in the number of young male patients seems to be attributable to the strain caused by protracted sitting in the wrong posture in offices and immoderate exercise," said Lee Poong-hoon at HIRA. "By contrast most female patients suffer from degenerative disc diseases."
Pneumonia was the second most common reason for hospitalization with 266,645 patients, and cataracts the third with 251,052.
