A dozen South Korean state organizations and civic groups have joined hands to help North Korea fight tuberculosis.
This is the first time that South Korean government and private organizations have teamed to help the North fight the disease.
They announced their efforts on Tuesday, which was World Tuberculosis Day.
Saenuri Party lawmaker Moon Jeong-lim and Dr. John Linton of Yonsei University's Severance Hospital were appointed to lead the group.
Moon said there are 140,000 tuberculosis patients in the North and 22,000 die each year and cited the ailment as the most serious health issue in any attempt to achieve reunification.
