Russia has expressed concern about the possible deployment in South Korea of a controversial U.S. missile defense system, calling on Seoul to carefully assess both pros and cons.
In a statement, Russia's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the deployment of Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea could complicate nuclear talks with North Korea and spark an arms race in Northeast Asia.
The ministry added that it "cannot help but be concerned, considering the destructive nature of the missile defense system's impact on international security and strategic stability."
The U.S. claims the THAAD will boost Seoul's ability to deter the nuclear and ballistic missile threat from North Korea and surveillance of the North.
China is also opposed.
