North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang on Monday and paid his respects to his late father Kim Jong-il, who would have been 73.
Kim saluted the late leader's embalmed corpse at midnight, accompanied by top brass like military politburo chief Hwang Pyong-so, Armed Forces Minister Hyon Yong-chol, and Army chief Ri Yong-gil, the official [North] Korean Central News Agency reported.
The regime handed out candy and cookies to young children across the country, KCNA added.
KCNA tried to push the young leader's caring, fatherly image. The Fisheries Ministry also sent fish to orphanages and nurseries in Pyongyang by special delivery.
A massive fireworks display was put on the banks of the Taedong River at midnight, boosting the holiday mood.
North Korean media took the day off denouncing South Korea.
Meanwhile, Kim reshuffled 27 senior officers.
