Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un exchange regular messages to keep in touch, the Russian ambassador to North Korea said Thursday.
"An active political dialogue is maintained at the highest and high levels between the two countries," Alexander Matsegora told the ITAR-TASS news agency.
"I believe a lot can be done to improve Russia-North Korea ties, considering unused potential," Matsegora said. He added Moscow has high hopes for economic cooperation.
Putin has invited both Kim and President Park Geun-hye to 70th anniversary celebrations of the Soviet Union's World War II victory.
Kim has apparently accepted, but many Western leaders are likely to stay away due to Moscow's stoking of the civil war in Ukraine.
