Ssangyong Motor's new compact SUV is taking the market here by storm.

The carmaker said Wednesday that it has sold over 8,000 Tivoli cars since its release on Jan. 13.

"At this rate, we will be able to sell 9,000 cars before the lunar New Year's holiday begins, and 10,000 by the end of this month," a Ssangyong spokesman said.

The Tivoli's annual sales target is set at 38,500 units for the domestic market.

The assembly line in the Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi Province is in full swing, operating seven days a week. But due to high demand, it will take around two months to fill orders.

Chung Moo-young, an executive at Ssangyong Motor, said "We expect sales to increase even more when the diesel model is launched in June. We hope that the Tivoli will turn the company around."
