Kang Jung-ho, the first Korean shortstop to play in Major League Baseball, is leaving for Bradenton, Florida on Friday to join his new team, the Pittsburg Pirates, for spring training.
Kang trained with his former teammates at the Nexen Heroes' training camp in Surprise, Arizona until Thursday.
The Heroes threw a farewell party for Kang. They gave him a cake with a candle numbered 27 in honor of the number he will wear in the spring.
"I have been really happy. I will always remember my old teammates and the surprise party," he said, choking back tears.
The Pirates will officially start their training on Feb. 24.
Kang originally planned to move to Florida next Tuesday, but decided to leave ahead of schedule to adjust to the new conditions.
