Eight civil servants will be disciplined for their misconduct in the investigation of the Korean Air "nut rage" incident.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport came under the fire for blatantly rigging the initial investigation to exculpate Korean Air heiress Cho Hyun-ah.
But Park Chang-jin, the purser whom Cho forced off the flight because a bag of nuts had been served her incorrectly, later revealed that he had been forced to revise his account of the incident no fewer than a dozen times.
The ministry launched an internal investigation.
"We decided to seriously punish one official, a former Korean Air employee who relayed internal information about the investigation to a Korean Air executive," a ministry spokesman said Monday. "Three others who were responsible for this probe will be reprimanded as well." Four others will be given a warning.
The official who faces serious punishment has already been arrested in a separate investigation by prosecutors.
Transport Minister Suh Seoung-hwan said, "We will consider hiring more specialists from other countries or placing a cap on the percentage of specialists from one airline to prevent potentially improper relations with the carrier."
