The daughter of disgraced SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won was commissioned as a Navy officer on Wednesday after 11 weeks of cadet training.

Chey Min-jung (23) was among the 108 new Navy ensigns commissioned in a ceremony at the Korea Naval Academy in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

She was accompanied by her sister and brother as well as her mother Roh Soh-yeong, a daughter of former President Roh Tae-woo.

"She seems to have chosen the Navy because she respects her grandfather and loves the sea," her mother said. "Neither my husband nor I opposed her idea of becoming a Navy officer."

Roh Tae-woo was an Army general before he became president. Chey's father was unable to make the ceremony because he is in jail for embezzlement.

Chey worked hard just like other ordinary cadets and successfully completed the training, according to Navy officers.

After a five-day leave, Chey will return to the Navy camp next Monday. She will be deployed on a warship in April following 14-week on-board training.
