"Begin Again" has become the most commercially successful independent film of all time in Korea. The film, which stars Keira Knightley, attracted 39,805 viewers on Monday alone, bringing the total to 2.94 million.
That beats the record set by Korean film "Old Partner" in 2009 of 2.93 million. The documentary about the 30-year friendship between a farming couple in their 80s and a cow enjoyed unexpected popularity when it was released.
Since its release on Aug. 13, "Begin Again" reached the 1.5 million viewer mark and the 2 million mark in 36 days. At this rate, it is very likely to surpass 3 million in a few days.
It was released in 185 screens but it is now showing on 491.
The film had made W23.4 billion (US$1=W1,056) in Korea as of Monday, over W6 billion more than the $16.14 million it earned in the U.S. Out of the total $36.18 million it has racked up outside the U.S., 61 percent was made in Korea.
The movie is a musical comedy and Knightley's attempt to break away from her usual stiff-jawed period roles.
